How to Bead Tubular Herringbone Stitch with Two Colors Tutorial

In today’s tutorial I will show you how to create a simple seed bead rope while learning the tubular herringbone beading stitch, using two different colors. I will create a separate video to teach the tubular herringbone technique in more than two colors, in the future. Since this is a technique video, we will not be creating a finished piece this time. Instead, I will show you how to begin beading tubular herringbone, how to tie off, and add new thread, and we will discuss some options for ending the rope.

This bead weaving basic technique has many off-shoots, including twisted tubular herringbone, which I will share soon, in a separate video. It’s also possible to complete this design using a single color, or create striped patterns, and more. Have fun exploring this versatile bead weaving stitch!

Please see below for examples of recommended materials:

Recommended Materials:

Tubular Herringbone Tips:

  • Use the most uniform seed beads that you can, such as the Japanese brands Toho, or Miyuki.
  • Use the same brand of seed bead for each color in the rope.
  • Pull the thread tight after the addition of each new row of beads.
  • Consider using decorative bead caps, or cord ends, to finish the ends of the beaded rope.

Tubular Herringbone Design Ideas:

  • Consider completing this rope in a single color of Duracoat metallic seed beads; such as, gold, or silver. Then use the beaded rope in place of a chain to hold a handmade beaded pendant.
  • Create horizontal stripes by alternating blocks of different colors.
  • Create smaller, vertical stripes by using four different colors in this design; one color per column.
